LABOR DAY GETAWAY: WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH

This summer flew by so quickly, I can hardly believe it. It seemed like a lot of the time we had to hide indoors to avoid the vampire mosquitoes in this area, which was a bummer. But, we fit in a trip to the beach a couple of weekends ago.

We’re still figuring out which beaches our family enjoys the most, so this time we went up closer to Shell Island.

Cole loved playing in the roughest part of the surf for hours on end. Paul and Bunny are out right at the break, but Cole preferred to stay where the clock-cleaning was full force. He said he was “King of the Sea.” The water was a really nice temperature so I played a lot and didn’t take very many photos. However, here are some I enjoyed.

Carter is still the boy who wanted to fly on the swings.

This pretty much sums up vacation naptime to me. I caught the stinker in bed eating his snack, but didn’t say a thing. I mean, why not slip into some crisp white sheets against your fresh sunburn, pop on some SpongeBob and munch on a hot dog?

HAPPY BOOM BOOM DAY

For the first time, to celebrate Independence Day this year we went as a family to purchase explosives and then spent the evening trying our best to avoid burning ourselves or anything else. I had thought we’d want to go see a big municipal show our first year where we’d be close to an easy to see fireworks show on the 4th, but the lurid roadside stand won us over. Everyone was *pretty* careful, and we still have all our fingers, toes, eyebrows, etc.

FAMILY ARBORETUM OUTING: THE CREEPERS & FLYERS & SWIMMERS

Last weekend we all went to check out the J.C. Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh. What a fantastic place! Administered by NC State, there are over a dozen different gardens, and we spent a few hours exploring on a wonderfully “room temperature” afternoon. I took roughly a gillion photos, so I’ll have to break it down into more manageable bites.

Though the plants were incredible, we’re noticers, and the little creatures everywhere also were marvelous.

Carter can sit and watch koi swim for longer than you’d expect from such a wiggly boy. Fish calm him. Oh, and those were different spiders up there. We see beautiful spiders in webs all over the place in this area.

FAMILY BEACH DAY: WRIGHTSVILLE

I grew up going to Wrightsville Beach, mainly. I remember one summer we went to Virginia Beach, and I also remember liking it, but I think, at that time (the 80s), VA Beach had a lot of, shall we say, rejuvenating to be done, and was just not as wholesome and fun as it now truly is for families. My father had spent a summer in Wrightsville when he was a younger man, and remembered it fondly, so we went there for our next beach vacation—and nearly every one afterwards, with a few exceptions along the way.

Wrightsville is also the most accessible beach from our area, being literally at the end of the line for I40. So, it was only a matter of time until we packed the kids in for a day trip. Saturday the weather was forecast to be in the low 80s and sunny, so it was time!

I’d mentioned Wrightsville Beach a few times over the years, but truly without expecting my family to be on it anytime. The day before we went, everyone asked me what I remembered about it. I said I remembered the drawbridge, King Neptune seafood restaurant (incredibly, a search just now confirms the place still exists), being fascinated by the Geechee Shine Parlor (long since gone, not even searchable—I think Geechee is a Gullah word?), that the sand was mainly crushed shell, the USS North Carolina (and my father aiming the cannons at buildings in Wilmington for kicks), and that we liked to pretend there were unicorns in the water in the moonlight (we watched The Last Unicorn a LOT).

The sand is still the same!

The water was 82 degrees that day, warmer than average for September according to some locals we asked. The waves were also uncommonly strong, and the kids enjoyed being knocked around in some real waves. I think I spent more time in the water that afternoon than I probably did in the past decade going to Santa Cruz, where 60 is more the norm. Bunny and I went out to where the waves were cresting and enjoyed a nice long game of “Duck, Dolphin, Jump,” wherein one, uh… ducks, dolphin dives through, or jumps waves, depending on what makes sense. Paul and I also nearly dislocated our shoulders helping Cole stay up in the surf. After a while he was tired and floppy, but he wanted more, more, more. Whaddaya gonna do when your 5 year old begs for more? Yep, exhaust yourself pleasing the guy. :)

The one real lowlight of our trip was the parking situation. Every single space in Wrightsville is paid parking. Okay, fine. However, half the spaces were unavailable, covered by red “no parking” signs. Soooo, we circled a lot, then I dropped off Paul and the kids so they’d be able to go onto the beach, and then I decided, instead of randomly trying streets, I would circle the same dang loop of spaces on Salisbury until one opened. Luckily, the top of the 3rd loop around, someone pulled out and even offered up his paid parking permit good the rest of the day. Score! However, the parking really is ridiculous. I think I’ll research to see if another area on the island would be easier, since, admittedly, we did go to the most popular spot.

Some nice things about using the Salisbury public access, however, is that there are public restrooms right by, rinse-off stations, and a playground. Of course we had to spend a good while checking it out on the way back to the car at the end of the day.

A lot of playgrounds in the area seem decidedly geared towards the preschool set, so it was nice that there were more challenging features, like this climbing wall for monkey boy, and some real swings.

082

I don’t think anyone really needed to get any ya-ya's out after a day playing hard on the beach, but something about a playground always gives them energy, and the ride home is always better with tired kids. We need to work on the parking situation to hopefully avoid future frustrations, but overall, we’re positive on Wrightsville Beach.

Oh, and for some fun, here are a few photos my father scanned from, well, I can tell from the regrettable hair, it’s from when I was in the 7th grade. I had an asymmetrical haircut growing out that summer. I looked like that poor girl in Pretty in Pink who got her head caught in the door. Fantastic.

But hey, at least I had a head in the 80s! Apparently my father didn’t. He did, however, rock the Casio digital watch. ;)

COUSINS BEACH DAY

My sister and I took our older kids to the beach yesterday, leaving the first birthday girl home because of some worrisome sniffles. It was just the right way to prepare for a long drive, and my both my boys napped much of the way back.

HAPPY SUMMER

The weather is warming, the final school bell’s rung, and it feels like summer. Our school has a half-day for last day, and the kids asked to host a little pool party to celebrate and enjoy the long afternoon shifting into summertime habits. This means late nights and calm mornings, lazy afternoons on the beach, wild boardwalk rides, countless hours swimming, cook outs with friends, leafy garden salads, homemade iced tea with lime and ice cold popsicles for the kids. To ensure I was able to monitor the action, we kept it manageable, with only a few 5-7 year olds and a few more 10-11 year olds, and it was amazing to see kids of such a wide age range playing so happily. Later that day some of us grown ups got in the spa and enjoyed BBQ ribs under the lights. Unfortunately I missed the photo of the magnum champagne geyser… too busy grabbing towels. Happy Summer!

Great American Summer

This spring the kids and I got season passes to Great America, which is not too far away. We like to go to fun places on our long Wednesday afternoons when school is in session, and we went nearly weekly this summer break—it feels so early to be wrapping up summer, but they go back Monday!

Note: I snapped a bunch of photos along the way and will share ‘em here, en masse. They’re all instagrams, about which I feel ambivalence. I like that I didn’t have to worry about the “big mama” camera when I had to relinquish my possessions more or less unattended while I was on a ride or worry that I’d be knocking it around a lot. However, they’re not the best photos. I decided since the photos will not be technically the same as I’d take otherwise, to have fun with it, playing with oddball (i.e. imperfect composition, when we only had one shot to conserve film) photos and filters just for fun. C’est la vie.

I’m really happy about buying the season tickets, overall. If he wears the “right” shoes, Cole is 48” by their measuring pole, and can ride anything he wants. It’s amazing what he does want to ride—and with enjoyment! Sometimes I have to hold onto his hand, more for me than him. :)
