MIDDLE SCHOOL ART DISPLAY

Bunny took art as one of her electives this semester, and they recently had a little exhibition set up all around the school.
Room allows only one item per child, and Bunny chose a clay mask she formed and glazed.

I keep this on my desk to gather paperclips, etc.
Bunny and I went just the two of us, and we had fun looking all around at the other classes and grades' displays. This one made both of us laugh.

Seuss Day

In a world of Seuss lovers, I have a Theo LeSeig fan. Just as silly, but perhaps not as manic, these are the stories Cole asks to be read. Friday was Dr. Seuss Day at preschool and we made this Ten Apples Up On Top!'>Ten Apples Up on Top! headband for him to wear. Cole made sure to put some apples “really wobbly” on the stack. :)

Halloween Day

This year since Halloween fell on a modified day, students were allowed to wear their costumes to school. Cole had to join in on the fun, of course.





The teachers always dress in theme, usually a whole school theme, then each grade chooses a subset of matching costumes. Last year was the ocean. Kinder teachers were jellyfish, others were in scuba suits, and so forth. This year many in our area were a little excited about a sporting event of some sort, so their costumes were very timely.



School dismissed early that day, so the long afternoon waiting for the Big Show felt all the longer for it.

Carter received a box of break-your-own geodes for his birthday just the day before and was anxious to get crackin’. We placed them in an old sock to help prevent shards from flying in our faces.


Somewhere between 70-80% are crystal-filled, and the rest are duds. Carter liked the rusty insides of the duds a lot, though. It’s a fun little activity with some educational merit. It’s a good way to amuse antsy kids and less than even a trip to the ‘cheap movie theater.’
By then we’d gotten to all of 2:30 with roughly 4 hours to burn before sundown. Thankfully, staying up late the night before made everyone a little more interested in chilling out than they usually are.

2008, first grade

Start Your Engines…

…the school year has begun!

Here’s hoping the first day goes smoothly for them both, as Carter enters his first year among the ‘big kids’ who go to school all day, everyday, and as Bunny starts her last year of elementary school.  My fingers are crossed that Carter takes enough time to eat snack and lunch, and he does not get lost trying to find his room after recess or lunch. (Big sister did once, and still remembers how upset she was until she spied a grown up she knew to ask for help—it’s not a huge school, but feels enormous when you’re 4 feet tall.)

In the meantime, I’ll be taking the next 20 minutes to finish the cup of stone-cold coffee I poured myself at 6:30, and then tackling some of the wall to wall messes summertime has presented to our home while littlest brother happily plays with toys no one can tell him he’s not using right. Ahhhh, exhale….

Thank You, Teacher Anna!

My baby finished his first year of preschool. I am so proud of him for the growth he’s displayed this year, going from a child who desperately desired to never be without his mama nearby to one who may still prefer me close, but also loves being at school. His teachers are no small part of this, and Teacher Anna will always be remembered fondly. I’ve said it about a million times, but it bears repeating that Cole’s stature sometimes makes it hard for him, since his body and maturity do not match, and he was allowed to grow at his own pace, blooming to become a very active participant in class who easily makes friends. (I know I’m partial, but he is pretty easy to like, I think.)

Crazy Hair Day

Tomorrow it’ll be a week since the last day of school, and I swear I’m only starting to recover—from that, and of course, camping. When did  the last week of school become such a to-do? Actually, it’s more like the last two weeks of school, which is now some extended celebration and teacher appreciation extravaganza. I kind of think it’s because STAR testing (our SOLs) is over in early May, and I don’t begrudge it as much as I wonder when this happened, or if I was just not noticing it when I was in elementary school (totally possible). At any rate, bear with me as I catch up chronicling all the special fun.

A week after Crazy Socks Day, which was… ya know… socks… but crazy!… it was time for Crazy Hair Day. Carter usually doesn’t want to have anything to do with crazy days. (With the socks, he considered wearing brown socks, the NUT! I think I said, “Whoa, hold on, let’s not get too crazy there!”) He wants to be normal, thanks.

However, all the kids were excited about this one, so we bought a few colors of spray on color and I died of fume inhalation covering their heads. I’m now a ghost writing this.  Boooo-oooo, oogey-boogey.

Anyhoo.

  

Carter elected for a subtle blue with glitter overlay, while Bun asked for half purple, half blue, yellow polka dots and glitter.

Sometimes little brothers like to have crazy hair, too, and Cole wanted a variation of Bun’s ‘look.’ Me, I had ‘crazy left had day’ since I shielded their faces, etc., with that hand. Go me! ;)

Another school year bit the dust!

Thank you, Mrs. F! Bunny loves you so much, and is already missing you (if not the homework!).

Thank you, Ms. P! Carter has grown *so* much this year, and you are no small part of that!

Our family has a little tradition over the past couple of years where our kids’ superstar teachers receive these stars as presents, which they can, of course, hang where they like—but we love to see the stars in classroom windows as our brood passes through.

I can’t believe summer is already here. It seems like just a blink ago I was sending them off for their first day. Both kids did very well on their final report cards and have earned a summer of fun. :)
